British electronic, rock duo Underworld have released their first album in five years, the mouthful of a name Barbara Barbara, we face a shining future.
Karl Hyde and Rick Smith are back with another album that has the vintage smoky Underworld sound with its distorted bass lines and synth chords, while Karl Hyde's hypnotic vocal chants draw the listener deeper and deeper into their inimitable grooves. The combination of techno, rock and house has always made Underworld one of the more unique acts in electronic music that translates to the live space.
The album is only seven songs, but the full 44 minutes that they write and produce builds, transforms and eventually evolves into one transcendent piece of art like the ethereal opening in "Low Burn" or the eventual epic finale with "Nylon Strung" that features a much different vocal style without the distortion normally hears from Underworld. It is more emotional and one final tug on the heartstrings before the curtains close on the LP.
Underworld are taking their act on the road this spring and some this summer to tour this new music. They have some sold out gigs in the UK next weekend with more shows in Holland and Belgium, before coming over to the United States for some shows surrounding their weekends at Coachella. They have two side show gigs on the West Coast and then a headlining show at Terminal 5 on April 20.
