Nicki Minaj has reached an out of court settlement with her former wig maker, Terrence Davidson, after he sued the artist for 30 million dollars. Davidson alleges that Minaj stole his hairstyles and sold them without his permission. Further, he claims Minaj failed to follow through with a promise she had made to put Davidson on a reality television program. He claims that this cost him millions in potential earnings and feels he should be compensated by Minaj.
According to The Jasmine Brand, the case was initially heard in federal court. The court ruled in favor of Minaj, saying that Davidson had no case. This was due to the lack of written material and binding contracts to support his claims. Davidson walked away from these hearings without a dime, but decided to appeal the decision. Davidson won the appeal on the grounds that both he and Minaj had entered into a verbal agreement regarding the sale of his designs. The judge felt that because Davidson had only agreed to create and sell wigs to Minaj for personal use, she had no right to distribute the designs on her own.
After the appeal, Davidson continued to fight his former employer. However, on April 1st, the wig designer filed a document with the court that absolved Minaj of all wrongdoing. The two parties settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.
Minaj has become known not only for her music, but for her unique and extravagant fashion sense. Regarding her choice of hair styles, Minaj said, "My wigs are ever changing in height, width, color, size. They make me feel happy. Wearing them makes me feel like I can be a different person every day and that is kind of exciting."
