During a recent appearance at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, Kanye West made some blatantly insulting comments about not only Samsung and Alicia Keys, but also about photographer Annie Leibovitz, claiming the famed photog pulled out of being his wedding photographer because she was "afraid of celebrity." However, West is now retracting those comments, saying they were "taken out of context and sensationalized."
The rapper / producer's quote, as reported on Billboard, was, "Annie Leibovitz pulled out right before the wedding –– maybe she was scared about the idea of celebrity. But I still wanted my wedding photos to look like Annie Leibovitz." The subsequent comments were about his now famous Instagram shot. Yes, the one that took him four days to get "just right."
This, of course, isn't the first time West's statements have been pulled, tugged, rearranged or morphed into some sort of takeoff for the media. And despite the upheaval caused from the quote, he maintains that his irritation was not at the photographer herself but at the fact that "he was not able to collaborate with Annie Leibovtiz at his recent wedding." Gabe Tesoriero, of West's Def Jam label, went on to insist that West meant no disrespect towards the legendary photographer and was not accusing her in any way at all.
"Kanye and Annie's representatives were in negotiations for weeks that were not completed by the time of the wedding," said Tesoriero. Leibovitz's representatives responded with, "Annie would have been happy to do the portrait, but she was never confirmed."
After all is said and done, while West's "dream wedding" didn't fully come to fruition, you have to admit that it was undoubtedly far from terrible.
So... are we buying this?
