While much of the music world was paying attention to see who would deliver the best live performance, bring out the best guests and rock the largest crowd at Coachella, tragedy was striking at the first day of Time Warp Argentina in Buenos Aires. On the first night, Friday, of the house and techno festival, a reported five people died from drug overdoses and another four remain in critical condition.
The Buenos Aires Herald reports that six people have died.
The head of emergency services told the BBC that the victims were ages 21-25 and are suspected of acute poisoning. Public services were called to the event once it became apparent that the private medical staff on hand was unable to handle to situation.
"We couldn't stay inside, we couldn't breathe," one of the participants told local TV channel TN via the BBC.
"It was too hot and there were too many people."
The second night of Time Warp, Saturday, was canceled.
Time Warp released a statement on their Facebook page, expressing their condolences for those who lost their lives and asking the loved ones of those impacted in their prayers.
"We express our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the People Who passed away. The cause of this tragedy will take some time to determine. The show is canceled for tonight.
We will let you know as soon as possible how you can refund the ticket for tonight. We ask that you ' keep the loved ones of people in our thoughts and prayers."
It will take some time to unpack all of this for authorities, but such a mass casualty will require some action taken to prevent such a thing from happening again in the future.
The two-day lineup included the likes of Tale of Us, Jamie Jones, Adam Beyer and Maceo Plex.
