A musical revolving around the world's most prescient political couple, the Clintons (sorry Obamas), is coming to New York City. Clinton: The Musical will make its United States debut in July as part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival, playing at the Pershing Square Signature Center.
Yes, "United States debut" does mean that the musical about the Clinton clan has taken place before outside of the country. Clinton received a nomination for Best New Musical at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland, and played at London's King's Head Theatre during 2013. The project is written by Australian Paul Hodge with music by his brother Michael Hodge.
The foreign outlook on American politics goes a long way in explaining the somewhat bizarre plot to the musical.
The play features two versions of Bill Clinton: One, W.J. Clinton, is the kind of guy that Americans elected President of the United States. Billy Clinton, portrayed by a different actor, is the one the seeks out the more, uh, you know, hidden benefits of holding such a powerful position. The stage play follows The Bills and Hilary "on their quest to save their presidency," according the the synopsis provided by producers.
A number of historical figures also make appearances throughout, including Newt Gingrich, Monica Lewinsky, Kenneth Starr and Dick Morris, a former friend of the Clintons who later would become a conservative commentator and active thorn in the family's side. Oh, and Eleanor Roosevelt will also feature during the play.
The producers suggest in their synopsis that "politics is show business for ugly people."
The moral: Don't go to Clinton: The Musical expecting an accurate historical representation.
