Breaking the Billboard history record, The Weeknd got eight wins which is the most number of awards a male artist received since 2011 for the Billboard Music Awards. Aside from The Weeknd, Adele is also a big winner with five awards, bringing home the Top Artist prize.
“I love him so much. I didn't know him, but he was so close to me. He will always be an inspiration,” said The Weeknd when he dedicated an award to Prince, The Star reported.
Although The Weeknd got eight awards, he wasn't able to get the top award, which went to Adele, who wasn't present because she is currently on tour. The Weeknd went home with the awards for Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top Streaming Songs Artist, Top R&B Artist, Top Streaming Song (Audio), Top R&B Album for "Beauty Behind the Madness" and Top R&B Song for "The Hills."
Meanwhile, Celine Dion received the Billboard Icon Award which was presented to her by her teenage son, René-Charles Angelil. She dedicated the award as well as her performance of Queen's "The Show Must Go On" to her late husband René Angélil, Huffington Post reported.
The show also had high-profile performances from the opening number of Britney Spears with a medley her best known hits, while Madonna paid homage to Prince by performing the "Nothing Compares 2 U" and singing "Purple Rain" as a duet with Stevie Wonder.
Spears was given the Billboard's Millennium Award which was previously given to Beyoncé and Whitney Houston, to honor her longtime influence in the music industry as well as her six previous wins, People reported.
