Prolific San Francisco garage rockers Thee Oh Sees are gearing up to release A Weird Exits, their 17th album (10th under their current moniker). Yesterday, the band unleashed lead cut, "Plastic Plant," a psychedelic ramble sure to please the band's diehard fans. Listen below.
The ferociously productive rock and roll outfit released LP Mutilator Defeated at Last just last year. Frontman John Dwyer's independent label, Castle Face Records, will release A Weird Exits this summer, with the band undertaking a huge world tour through the fall.
Sprung from the late-century NorCal neo-hippie scene, Thee Oh Sees released their first albums as OCS and The Oh Sees (sans archaic extra 'E') before finding indie acclaim with their contemporary handle. Leader Dwyer spoke to Tiny Mix Tapes about their gestational setting, the described San Franciscan milieu recalling that of the early '90s Thames Valley "Scene That Celebrates Itself":
"Almost all of the people in San Francisco involved in the scene are our friends. You go see their shows, and they totally inspire you. You take it back to practice. I'm sure that it works that way for everyone here. I guess we all go see each other's shows, love each others' bands."
A Weird Exits promises to be an enjoyably expansive work -- The Oh Sees' oeuvre has only grown stronger and more eclectic with each release. Whether to remain innovative or simply staving off boredom, Dwyer and crew continually incorporate new elements within their self-contained fuzz-rock universe. To wit, the singer recalled inheriting the pursuit of diverse sounds from a parent:
"I got into all these weird instruments because my step dad is a prolific yard-saler," Dwyer says. "Once he realized that I was going to do this for life, he got me a flute, a saxophone, a bunch of crazy '80s keyboards, amplifiers, anything he could get his hands on at garage sales and flea markets."
