Lana Del Rey Is Overly Attached Girlfriend: A Case Study with Five Prime Examples

There was a minor awkward scandal this week when Frances Bean Cobain, the daughter of deceased Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, called out pop star Lana Del Rey for glamorizing the idea of dying young. Although it's never been a secret, it led us at Music Times to revisit the themes of obsessive love and dying like James Dean that make frequent appearances throughout Del Rey's discography.

We had a mild sense of deja vu when considering her lyrics. What other female icon reminded us so much of the pop star? Then it struck us: Overly Attached Girlfriend.

Even in a meme world that features characters such as Slenderman, who apparently inspire murder cults, Overly Attached Girlfriend has always been the creepiest member of the caption culture. For those unfamiliar, the typical O.A.G. meme features a photo of a wide-eyed teen with a disturbing grin, sharing quotes ranging from disturbing sexual fantasies to threatening the murder of other girls who dare speak to her guy.

Take lyrics from Del Rey's best known songs and place them in Overly Attached Girlfriend's mouth, and all of a sudden the pop star seems way, way creepier.

For example, if you consider "Dark Paradise" then you'll see a woman who's so attached to her beau that she won't move on after he leaves. Even if by "leaves" we mean "he died."

Next week we'll consider other theories in Del Rey philosophy, including "Lana Del Rey is A Living Metaphor for Daisy Buchanan*." Post your own Overly Attached Girlfriend interpretations of pop songs below.
