Robin Thicke: estranged wife
As opposed to the lounge act vibes of the lead Paula single "Get Her Back," "Lock The Door" pulls from Thicke's first influences, with a heavy emphasis on old soul records and classic R&B. A swell of building chorus voices crescendo throughout the first 20 seconds of the track, with Thicke pulling old school "Sha na nas" above the female voices.
Even if the soulful music is a marked improvement from the "Get Her Back" cheesefest, the lyrical content still reads of too much information in the wake of a heartbreaking marital separation. We don't want to say Thicke comes off as desperate on Paula, but yeah, he kind of does.
Thicke largely takes on the perspective of a woman who locked her man out (obviously Patton, not a lot of subtlety in Thicke's new material), saying that she had warned the man and eventually had enough.
In the bluesy jam, it's clear that Thicke is not receiving the message that his former love doesn't want him anymore, but this is coming from a guy who is very publicly trying to win his wife back, so he obviously doesn't get the hint...
