Bruno Mars made one special fan's day over the weekend. The pop star gave 11-year-old Zumyah Thorpe a heartfelt serenade to show his support after learning that she survived a brain injury.
Thorpe went through months of mental and physical issues after she sustained a traumatic head injury with brain swelling when a drunk driver crashed their pickup truck into her family's car last March, according to the Daily News.
Her pregnant mother and two sisters did not survive the crash. Thorpe barely survived and had to have a portion of her skull removed due to injuries that left her with significant impairments to her motor and language skills. What got her through this rough time was Mars' music.
Mars called Thorpe, "an inspiration to the world" after learning her story.
"I am absolutely convinced that her learning to sing and singing those Bruno Mars songs and being able to say 'Bruno Mars' is in itself a miracle for her," Dr. Nancy Bass, a pediatric neurologist at Cleveland's UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, told WKYC. "Knowing all the words to the songs has helped her recover and helped her to learn to actually have language."
As the Daily News notes, Mars learned of Thorpe's journey via social media and reached out to meet his brave, young fan. He met her privately to sing her four songs and give her a teddy bear. Thorpe also got the chance to see Mars perform at his show in Cleveland on Saturday, where he serenaded her once more with his hit "Just the Way You Are."
Mars posted pictures of the two of them to his Instagram with the captions, "Tonight's show was dedicated to this amazing young woman. I love you, Zumyah," and "Zumyah tonight you gave my band and I something we've never felt before," adding, "You're an inspiration to the world! #WeLoveYouZumyah."
