Madonna is donating to her hometown of Detroit, according to a press release. The money will go toward the construction of a new youth boxing gym and toward buying iPods, iPads and other supplies for students at a charter school in her hometown, the Associated Press reports.
According to the statement, Madonna's donations to three needy Detroit organizations represent "the first phase of a long-term commitment to" the city.
Her money will benefit the Downtown Youth Boxing Gym, which provides free after-school boxing and educational mentoring to children; the Detroit Achievement Academy, which needs new equipment, art and music supplies; The Empowerment Plan, a nonprofit that employs homeless women who sew clothing and give them to the homeless.
In early June, Madonna visited severeral community groups in the city and posted photos to Instagram. Her photo with the women at The Empowerment Plan is captioned, "The Amazing Women at Empowermentplan! They make coats that turn into sleeping bags! So innovative. So inspiring! #artforfreedom #revolutionoflove #bringbackdetroit."
"I was deeply inspired by the efforts of so many people who I met who have dedicated themselves to helping the kids and adults in Detroit elevate themselves from the cycle of poverty," Madonna said in a statement. "It was obvious to me that I had to get involved and be part of the solution to help Detroit recover."
Madonna's efforts are part of a larger effort to revive the city, which filed for the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.
"A piece of my heart will always be in Detroit, and I'm humbled to be able to give back to my community."
How much money the pop icon is donating has yet to be revealed. But no matter how humble-braggy a press release about giving money seems, we can't knock her efforts to try to help Detroit.
