If you had Shazam in your pool of "what app was going to get a game show next," well guess what smart gambling addict you just won! Fox has picked up a new show Beat Shazam from The Voice producer Mark Burnett, Don't Forget The Lyrics creator Jeff Apploff and Shazam. The show will bolster the musical lineup for Fox as they retire American Idol after its 15th season.
The interactive musical game show will pit teams against each other to try and identify a song according to Fox Executive Dave Madden via Deadline. The winning team then has to compete against the machine to earn a cash prize.
No set launch date has been set.
We will see if they are able to play the music loud enough for Shazam to hear or if they position the listening device in the right direction so the app can work. Also the teams ought to encourage loud cheering by the crowd to try and disrupt the algorithm.
Either way, it doesn't seem likely that a group of humans will be able to guess many songs faster then Shazam, unless the selections are super obvious and plucked straight from the chorus.
Shazam was founded in 1999. Since then there have been more than 25 billion Shazam queries and the app currently has over one hundred million users globally.
This is not the only game show that is being brought to Fox in wake of American Idol. They are also adapting the U.K. hit show You're Back in the Room to the American audience with Taye Diggs as host.
