Die Antwoord is claiming the character of The Joker, played by Jared Leto in Suicide Squad, is a rip-off of the band’s style.
Leader of the South African rap group Yolandi Visser even accused director of the DC Comics film of “jocking” their style in an Instagram post.
Suicide Squad was released this past Friday (Aug. 5) and additionally stars Margot Robbie as fiendish super villainess Harley Quinn. Following its release Visser has asserted that the filmmaker, David Ayer, took influences from the rap group without giving them their just dues.
Visser took to Instagram in order to post a video that insinuated that there are distinct similarities between her style and Harley Quinn’s, as well as her bandmate Ninja and the Joker. Yolandi further asserted that the director Ayer had gotten in touch with the band prior to shooting the movie and that cast members admitted he referenced them throughout the film.
She took it a step further when she said that Ayer should begin a “I’m a fake f*ck” crew and loop in rapper Kanye West. Craig Mack’s “Jockin’ My Style” is added to the film as a soundtrack. The group has had issues with West in the past when he interrupted them in the studio.
The group frequently takes issue with those in the music industry and have had a long standing feud with Lady Gaga. Ninja called out the pop star for copying Vissar’s hairstyle during New York Fashion Week in 2015, saying that her bleach blonde wig with baby bangs are a carbon copy of his bandmate’s.
Die Antwoord again took to Instagram to voice their displeasure, and Ninja posted a close-up photo of Gaga front row at the Alexander Wang show to voice his displeasure over her hairstyle.
