Britney Spears is slated to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards this year as the second confirmed artist for the 2016 show. Returning to the show as a performer marks a milestone for Spears, as she hasn’t graced the VMAs stage in over a decade. The pop star will be performing with rapper G-Eazy for the live premiere of her "Make Me" single from her forthcoming album, Glory.
Her ninth studio album is slated for release on August 26.
Spears is a veteran of the award show, receiving 28 nominations and won 5 times in the past. The news that she would be performing at the VMAs was announced with a video created by Radical Friend, an experimental director based in L.A. According to Billboard, the video includes clips of past VMA performances, including her debut medley of “Baby One More Time/Tearing Up My Heart” with N’SYNC in 1999 and the infamous performance where she locked lips with Madonna in 2003.
Rihanna is additionally confirmed as a performer for the 2016 VMAs and is also the Video Vanguard recipient. This year, fans can even vote for Best New Artist by using the Facebook messenger app.
Spears has been making year another comeback this year and also hit the Billboard Music Awards, performing a medley of her greatest hits at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The performance reportedly began with a rendition of her 2013 hit “Work B*tch” and transitioned into classic mid-career tracks “Breathe On Me,” “I’m a Slave 4 U,” “Touch of My Hand” and “Toxic.”
