A record streak atop the the Australian singles charts has ended for pop group Justice Crew as a new entry has finally overtaken the track "Que Sera" for the top-selling spot. Joel and Benji Madden, best known for their former gig Good Charlotte, reached the top spot with the single "We Are Done."
Justice Crew had to be glad that the Madden brothers hadn't come along one week earlier. "Que Sera" just broke the record for the longest run atop the chart for a group from Australia at nine weeks. The previous record had been shared by three acts—"Australiana" by Austen Tayshus, "Truly, Madly Deeply" by Savage Garden and "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye—at eight weeks. The ARIA (the Australian Recording Industry Association) numbers have been tracked since 1983.
Taking the accomplishment of Justice Crew into consideration, the somewhat odd nature of Australian music listening is brought to the fore. For example, "Que Sera" has sold 210,000 copies thus far, which gives it triple-platinum status by ARIA's consideration. So yes, the quirky number of 70,000 is single platinum status. Another interesting note: The overall record for most weeks on top of the charts for any single, not just one by an Australian artist is 13 weeks for Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise." Think of the last 30 years and all the hit singles that have been released, and yet the most popular in Australia has been "Gangsta's Paradise." And we seem to be the only one's who notice the similarity in titles between the "Justice Crew" and "The Juice Crew."
But we should give Australia a break this week as one of it citizens, Sia, will most likely top the album charts in both her homeland AND the United States with her album 1000 Forms of Fear.
