‘Deadpool 2’ Filming On Halt As It Loses Female Stunt Driver In Crash

Filming for the highly-anticipated "Deadpool 2" has been paused indefinitely after one of its stunt drivers met a fatal accident on Monday. Details are still kept to a minimum, while cast and crew, including Director David Leitch and lead Ryan Reynolds, mourn the loss.

The "Deadpool 2" stunt driver, who was identified as professional road racer Joi Harris, reportedly lost control of her motorcycle while filming a scene, crashing through the plate-glass window of the nearby Shaw Tower in Vancouver, Canada. Harris, standing in for "Deadpool 2" character Domino, was wearing no helmet during the stunt, as the character, to be played by Zazie Beetz, was not supposed to wear one for the scene.

Harris, also known as "SJ", is labeled as the first African American Professional Road Racer in the sport's history, Deadline reports. "Deadpool 2" was also supposed to mark the athlete's first appearance as a stunt performer.

In the aftermath of the incident, Ryan Reynolds, who plays the titular Merc-with-a-Mouth, has stated that the cast and crew of "Deadpool 2" are devastated and heartbroken by the untimely death of Harris. According to Reuters, the Vancouver native shared via social media their sentiments, though no additional details were given.

The tragic motorcycle accident on the "Deadpool 2" is the second fatal on-set accidents in 17 years that resulted in death. Last July 12, John Bernecker, a stuntman for the hit television series "The Walking Dead, fell during filming that resulted in massive head injury. Although he was brought to Atlanta Medical Center, Bernecker succumbed to the injuries shortly after.

"Deadpool 2" is a follow up to Fox's massively successful "Deadpool" movie. Released in 2016, the film grossed almost $800 million worldwide and reinvigorated the waning "X-Men" movie franchise held by Fox. Josh Brolin, who will reprise his role as Thanos in the upcoming "Avengers: Infinity War" movies, will play as Deadpool's well-known buddy Cable.

"Deadpool 2" is set to arrive in June 2018.
