It's official: Mariah Carey will once again perform at this year's New Year's Rockin' Eve show to ring in the new year, and also perhaps to redeem herself after her huge flub at last year's show.
The singer just announced via Instagram that she will be taking the stage during a live broadcast of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest.
"Take 2. #RockinEve #NYE," Carey wrote.
"We can all agree that last year didn't go exactly as planned and we are thrilled to move forward together to provide America with an incredible night of music and celebration on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2018," said Carey and Dick Clark Productions in a joint statement.
For those who didn't get to witness Carey's performance last year, suffice it to say that it was marked with technical difficulties. At one point during the performance, she became visibly upset and stopped singing altogether, despite a pre-recorded track playing the background. The performance became a viral hit on the internet, and online denizens didn't mince their words, harshly criticizing Carey's flub. Later, Carey admitted that she didn't sing for a large duration of the performance because she couldn't hear properly.
It led to a public spat between Carey and Dick Clark productions, with the signer arguing sabotage via technical glitches and the Dick Clark productions refuting such claims and arguing Carey hadn't rehearsed enough for her performance.
After the fallout, Carey said she was mortified and was going to take a break from social media altogether.
Now, it seems both have put the past behind them, and Carey is set to attempt another performance this year, hopefully with no flubs this time. According to Variety, Carey agreed to do the show without any hesitation. This year, the production will be more bombastic and grand, complete with a full band and dancers, much more in line with her Las Vegas shows. Her "redemptive performance" truly sounds exciting.
The show will air on ABC on Dec. 31 starting 8:00 p.m. and will feature performances from Nick Jonas, Sugarland, Camila Cabello, and even Britney Spears, who will apparently appear from her Piece of Me show in Las Vegas.
