WATCH: Netflix’s Sci-Fi Cyberpunk Mystery ‘Altered Carbon’ Gets Official Trailer

Netflix just dropped the official trailer for Altered Carbon. The original series is set to premiere on Feb. 2.

What Is The Series About?

Altered Carbon is based on Richard K. Morgan's 2002 cyberpunk novel of the same name, and it centers on a rich man living 300 years into the future. Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy) wants to solve his murder so he hires the help of Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman), a soldier who was killed in action 250 years ago.

New Teaser Release

The over two-minute clip of Altered Carbon opens with Takeshi waking up from the dead and finding himself being examined by a group of scientists. They tell him that he has been gone for 250 years, and things are no longer the same.

To help solve other crimes and mysteries, Takeshi will be given a new identity, as well as a new body. Since human consciousness can be digitally restored in the future, people like Takeshi can change and upgrade their physical appearance whenever necessary.

If Takeshi is able to solve a single murder, most especially the one involving Laurens, he will be rewarded with a new life on Earth. However, if his mission fails, there will be various consequences.

Cast And Crew

Altered Carbon is written and produced by Laeta Kalogridis, and the series' pilot was directed by Miguel Sapochnik.

The word about Netflix releasing the series, featuring Purefoy, first came to light in 2016. At that time, the popular streaming site announced that Martha Higareda will star in the series as Kristin Ortega, a smart and tough lieutenant in Bay City PD.

Leonardo Nam will give life to the character of Stronghold Kovacs, the body that Takeshi was born into. Dichen Lachman will play the role of Reileen Kawahara, Takeshi's older sister. The siblings share a dark and violent childhood.

Premiere Date Announcement

Meanwhile, Netflix also released a shorter teaser for Altered Carbon last month, which also confirmed the official premiere date for the project. The one-minute clip opened with a woman who explained how someone's consciousness can be transferred into another person's body.

The teaser ended with James talking about the dangers of living in the world far too long than he should have.

In other news, Netflix is also scheduled to drop a slew of other sci-fi series, namely Seven Seconds, Disenchantment, Dogs of Berlin, Maniac and more.
