Halsey recently opened up about her experiences with sexual assault. The singer recited a poem while at the 2018 Women's March in New York City on Saturday, Jan. 20.
The singer revealed that she was sexually assaulted and raped in 2002 when she was just 8 years old. Years later, her boyfriend forced her to have sex with him. Last year, Halsey was also assaulted by a man that she trusted. The "Bad at Love" singer also revealed that one of her best friends was raped in 2009.
She said that her friend was so worried because she could not afford to pay for her baby's abortion. If she decided to keep her baby, her parents would have "killed" her. After reciting her poem A Story Like Mine, Halsey said that she hopes President Donald Trump will also listen to what she just shared.
Halsey's Personal Struggles
This is not the first time that Halsey opened up about her struggles. Last year, she released the song "Angel On Fire," which seemed to be about a faded icon. The 23-year-old New Jersey native explained that there is actually a deeper meaning to the song.
"It's about having a party at my house that I'm not attending. I locked myself in my bedroom, went to sleep, and let everyone party until 6 a.m. Then I did it again. Again, and again, and again," said Halsey.
Singer's Miscarriage
Two months later, she opened up about her miscarriage while she was on tour. She said that she decided to go to Planned Parenthood for support because she trusts the place. However, her decision to team up with the organization was criticized by other people because there is a negative impression about Planned Parenthood.
"In 2015, I had a miscarriage while I was on tour, and the first place I went was Planned Parenthood. All the responses were like, 'Well, if you have $100,000 to donate, why did you have to go to Planned Parenthood?' Other people have controlled this negative narrative that it's a low-income place, this place in the ghetto... But it's a doctor's office," explained Halsey.
Years into her career, Halsey still cannot believe that fans love her music. She said that all of her life did not seem to matter until she started writing her own songs. Now, she is residing in Los Angeles, starring in music videos, and inspiring her fans with her tracks.
