Katy Perry says that she is open to rewriting her hit song "I Kissed A Girl" today. The track was released in 2008.
Perry admitted that a lot of things have changed in the past 10 years. When she released "I Kissed A Girl," bisexuality was not as widely talked about then as it is now.
"Your mind changes so much in 10 years, and you grow so much. What's true for you can evolve," said Perry.
During a recent interview, Perry is seen watching her favorite fan covers of some of her biggest songs. Some of her fans sung "Firework," "Unconditionally," and "The One That Got Away." Perry also listened to Ramona Rox's acoustic rendition of "I Kissed A Girl," and that was when she commented about the song's lyrics.
Katy Perry's Songs Criticized
The song, regardless of how popular it was, also sparked a fair amount of debate among song critics and LGBTQ activists. Perry admitted that her song perpetuated a lot of stereotypes, but she also said that the lyrics should not be taken too seriously.
Years ago, "I Kissed A Girl" also ignited homophobia claims. Some critics claimed that the track was also an appropriation of the gay lifestyle.
Perry's other song, "UR So Gay," which was released before "I Kissed A Girl," was also slammed for its derogatory use of the word gay. The song is about Perry's ex-boyfriend who acts unmanly, but who is actually straight.
Even though Perry was accused of being homophobic, Jane Czyzselska, the editor of lesbian lifestyle magazine Diva, said that she does not think this is the case.
"I don't think she's being homophobic, I think she's a bit dumb... a bit un-self-aware. The kind of behavior you get from some privileged people - 'oh, I don't realize.' Perhaps she doesn't know any gay people who have suffered verbal or physical abuse," said Czyzselska.
Katy Perry Defends Her Song
Perry previously defended her decision to write "I Kissed A Girl" and said that it was a topic that was on everyone's tongue years ago.
"And even though it was 'I kissed a girl, and I liked it, and that's what I like to do sometimes,' I sang it with a wink. It may be a fun little pop song, but sometimes fun little pop songs most clearly express the zeitgeist," said Perry.
