Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr has announced the follow-up to his 2013 solo debut The Messenger. Titled Playland, the new album will be released October 6 with the lead single "Easy Money" debuting the same day.
As Billboard reports, the new album was written while on tour the past two years and is meant to be a continuation of The Messenger. Recorded at London's Tritone Studios, the effort was produced by Marr and co-producer/member James Doviak, mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer in New York, and mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios.
In a recent interview with NME, Marr spoke about the themes on the record as "the atmosphere of the city, and the preoccupations of the people who live in them; those preoccupations being consumerism, sex and anxiety, or distraction and transcendence from those things."
He mentions his childhood, his fascination with psychogeography, greed, and communication as inspirations for the record.
Marr isn't the only Smith's member to release a solo album this year. Morrissey is fresh of the release of his album World Peace Is None Of Your Business.
