Taylor Swift joins dozens of celebrities who have pledged their support for "March For Our Lives," the national protest against gun violence and mass shootings.
The pop superstar revealed on social media posts that she has donated money to support the initiative.
"No one should have to go to school in fear of gun violence. Or to a nightclub. Or to a concert. Or to a movie theater. Or to their place of worship," she wrote. "I've made a donation to show my support for the students, for the March For Our Lives campaign, for everyone affected by these tragedies, and to support gun reform. I'm so moved by the Parkland High School students, faculty, by all families and friends of victims who have spoken out, trying to prevent this from happening again."
"March For Our Lives" serves as a response to the mass shooting that occurred at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Feb. 14. The tragic event, which was named as one of the deadliest school massacres in the world, took the lives of 17 people, including students and teachers.
Leaning Left
Swift has regularly made headlines for her good deeds, but she does not typically get involved in political discussions. While other celebrities have publicly expressed their political leanings, the "Delicate" singer has kept mum even after the alt-right has glorified her as the poster girl for white supremacists in the United States.
In fact, her new networking app The Swift Life launched in December was immediately flooded by supporters of Donald Trump. It became a hotbed for heated and divisive political commentary.
Even then, the 28-year-old singer refused to speak about the issue. She has been criticized for failing to denounce white supremacists which, many speculated, was because of the fear that she will lose a massive chunk of her fan base.
From her Instagram post, it does not look like the Grammy-winning singer will be marching in Washington or in any of the scheduled protests around the United States. However, her donation certainly helps the survivors of the mass shooting in their cause to end gun violence and make their schools safer.
Celebrity Support
The "End Game" singer is not the only celebrity who have voiced their support for the "March For Our Lives" movement. Broadway stars Lin-Manuel Miranda and Ben Platt have recorded a Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen mashup that is now available for purchase. Portion of the proceeds from the track will be handed to the initiative.
A Wrinkle in Time star Oprah Winfrey has also donated to the initiative to help students who want to join the march fly to the Washington venue and demand that their safety be the priority.
The "March For Our Lives" protest will be held on Saturday, March 24, in several locations in the United States.
