Despacito, Other Vevo Youtube Music Videos Hacked, Briefly Taken Down

Hackers surprised YouTube users on Wednesday morning. Prosox and Kuroi'sh deleted the music video for "Despacito" among other clips.

According to BBC, music videos for tracks from Luis Fonsi, Shakira, Taylor Swift, Drake, and Adele were taken down by the hackers for a few hours. Fans who tried to watch the official clips saw thumbnail images and titles, which includes the aliases of the hackers.

A few hours later, "Despacito" became available on YouTube again, but the platform's most streamed music video only had a few thousand views. After the clip's release last year, "Despacito" has already garnered 5 billion views.

YouTube, Vevo Issue Statements

"After seeing the unusual upload activity on a handful of VEVO channels, we worked quickly with our partner to disable access while they investigate the issue," read YouTube's statement.

Vevo also released a statement regarding the hacking incident.

"Vevo can confirm that a number of videos in its catalog were subject to a security breach today, which has now been contained. We are working to reinstate all videos affected and our catalog to be restored to full working order. We are continuing to investigate the source of the breach," read the statement.

Prosox tweeted about the hacking incident and said that it was just done for fun. The hacker also addressed YouTube and Vevo in two separate posts.

Luis Fonsi Talks About 'Despacito'

In related news, despite the hackers' attempt to jeopardize the success of "Despacito," the song by Fonsi and Daddy Yankee still hit its 50th week at no. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart. Earlier this year, Fonsi talked about his hit song and said that "Despacito" has opened new opportunities for him.

"Of course, some things change. I've been able to perform and take my music to countries, to places where Latin music, or music in Spanish normally does not get played, so that's what I'm mostly proud of - to be able to go into beautiful places and sing in Spanish, sing in English and get to know a new audience, and to be able to celebrate all of this with the audience that has seen me grow up in the last 20 years," said Fonsi.

Fonsi's other hit songs are "Echame la culpa," "No Me Doy por Vencido," "Aqui Estoy Yo," "Llegaste Tu," "Party Animal," "Que Quieres de Mi," "Nada Es Para Siempre," "Llueve por Dentro," "Respira," "Se Supone," "Tu amor," "Aprendi," "Gritar," and "No te pertenece."
