Ed Sheeran is a lonely and brokenhearted puppet in the adorable but heart-wrenching music video for "Happier," a track from his uber-successful album Divide.
The music video was released on Friday, April 27. It was directed by Emil Nava who also previously worked with Eminem and Post Malone.
'Happier' Now
In "Happier," puppet Ed walks down the 29th and Park Avenue when he catches a sight of his ex-girlfriend, a balloon lady, on a date with an orange-furred muppet.
"Saw you walk inside a bar," he croons. "He said something to make you laugh."
Puppet Ed then proceeds to drown his sorrow in a bottle of alcohol while he reminisces about the past and grapples with the fact that his beloved is now with someone else.
"'Cause baby you look happier, yo do/ My friends told me one day I'll fell it too," he continues. "And until then I'll smile to hide the truth/ But I know I was happier with you."
The music video ends with the balloon lady flying off into the sky.
The ginger-haired puppet that stars in the music video previously appeared in "Sing," from his previous album Multiply.
In a previous interview with the Rolling Stone, the 27-year-old revealed that he wrote the song after he had run into his ex and her new boyfriend in a wedding.
"He was really sound," the singer-songwriter said about the encounter. "I thought, 'Of course, this is what's meant to happen.'"
But, now, he really is so much happier. He is engaged to be married to his childhood friend Cherry Seaborn.
In addition, the Grammy-winning singer has an incredibly successful music career (he received 15 nominations at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards) and a burgeoning career in the movie business.
Future Projects
Sheeran is reportedly in talks to star in an upcoming movie from Danny Boyle (127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire) and Richard Curtis (Love Actually, About Time). The still-untitled project reimagines what the world would look and sound like if the Beatles never existed at all.
The musical is currently called All You Need Is Love. Not many details are available as of this writing, but Sheeran is also said to have signed up to write original music for the big screen offering.
The British artist is also currently on a world tour to promote his album, Divide. Sheeran will kick off the North American leg of his tour in August in Pasadena, California.
