Kanye West's songs are banned from a Detroit radio station. 105.1 The Bounce's DJs BiGG and Shay Shay explained their decision on Thursday, May 3.
BiGG and Shay Shay said that the rapper's recent comments on slavery made them decide to #MuteKanye.
"[We] don't want to hear Kanye's music, we don't want to play Kanye on our show, we don't want to talk about Kanye anymore," said the DJs.
Kanye West Claims Slavery Is A Choice
Earlier this week, Kim Kardashian's husband claimed that slavery is a choice, and his statement did not sit well with a lot of people.
"I'm a black person, a [member] of the black community, but I'm not just that. I'm always gonna represent that, but I also represent the world. When you hear about slavery for 400 years, for 400 years?! That sounds like a choice. We're mentally imprisoned," said West.
A day later, West tried to explain himself on social media and said that he thinks open discussions should take place so that people can learn more about slavery. However, several personalities threw shade at him for his comments.
Rapper Faces Backlash
Trevor Noah, a host for the Daily Show, responded to West on Thursday.
"No Kanye, slavery is not a choice. Going blond is a choice. Both are terrible but one is easier to undo. Slavery was a choice: for white people. Normally, I wouldn't care what Kanye West says about slavery or black history. What does suck is now every member of the Tiki Torch Club is going to use Kanye's words to justify their hate," said Noah.
Kimberly Foster, a journalist, seconded Noah's statement. She said that slavery is not a choice just like poverty.
Kris Jenner 'Defends' Kanye West
However, Kris Jenner seemingly sided with West on the issue. During her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Thursday, the mom of six said that West must have a good explanation for what he said about slavery.
The momager added that West has a lot of love for his fans so he would never intentionally say something that would hurt them. Jenner said that she is confident the rapper will explain himself in the coming days.
However, Jenner refused to elaborate on the issue when asked by host Ellen DeGeneres. She simply encouraged everyone to wait for West to talk about it, because he will definitely do so soon.
