Mel B gives her golden buzzer to 15-year-old America's Got Talent contestant Amanda Mena. The teenager blew the Spice Girls member away with her singing chops.
Prior to her performance, Mena was first interviewed by the judges. She revealed that she was bullied a lot because she could not speak English the first time she and her family relocated to the United States. Simon Cowell asked the teen singer how she managed to move past the struggles she faced, and she said that she turned to music for help.
Mena performed her own rendition of Aretha Franklin's hit song "A Natural Woman." She belted out her high notes with ease, and Mena also played around with her vibrato. Following her performance, the student received a standing ovation.
Judges React To Amanda Mena's Performance
Cowell, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, and Mel B all praised her for her talent. Mel B could not find the words to express how delighted she was with her performance. Instead of talking more, she told Mena that she will simply help silence those who bullied her. Mel B then pressed the golden buzzer and surprised everyone in the room with her move.
The Spice Girls member went up the stage to congratulate Mena as well as to meet her mom. The young girl thanked Mel B for giving her the golden buzzer, and Mel B said that she deserved it. Mena will go straight to the first live show this season alongside the other golden buzzer recipients.
Golden Buzzer Recipients
America's Got Talent host Tyra Banks was the first person that gave her golden buzzer to Zurcaroh, an aerial dance group. Cowell gave his golden buzzer to Michael Ketterer, a father of six who sang his heart out during his audition.
Last week, Mandel gave 13-year-old Courtney Hadwin his golden buzzer after she shocked everyone with her performance. The teenager looked very scared when she walked up the stage before her song number. However, the minute she opened her mouth to sing, her personality just shone through.
Mandel was extremely proud of Hadwin that he did not waste any time to give her his golden buzzer. He also likened her to Janis Joplin. As it turned out, Hadwin is a fan of the singer. One website is predicting the possibility that Hadwin will win this season.
