A cop has been placed into desk duty for a comment on Facebook that mock the death of the up-and-coming hip-hop star Jimmy Wopo.
Pittsburgh Police Under Fire For Facebook Comment
Officer Brian Martin from Pittsburgh got involved in an online exchange on the social media platform with another person. The topic was about the protests surrounding the death of Antwon Rose who was gunned down by the cops last week.
The other commenter suggested that the death of Wopo, who was murdered in a drive-by shooting earlier this month in his hometown of Pittsburgh, was completely forgotten now that the state is an uproar to demand justice for Rose. However, Officer Martin said he has not forgotten. In fact, he is still celebrating.
The post has been taken down, but not before people took a screenshot.
The police department said in a statement that an investigation surrounding the hateful social media post is ongoing. The authorities promised to hold the officer accountable for the words he left online.
"Comments that disparage victims and endanger the community and fellow officers will not be tolerated by the City of Pittsburgh," read the press release. Such behavior is a poor reflection on the Bureau and will not be tolerated."
In a press release, spokesman Chris Togneri revealed that Officer Martin has been placed on "modified duty" while the Office of Municipal Investigations is looking into the matter. Officer Martin has not issued a comment as of this writing.
The Pittsburgh police prohibits officers from making comments, speeches, or any form of statements on social media that may be deemed "unlawful, obscene, defamatory, or would tend to destroy the respect or diminish confidence in the operations of the Bureau of Police," reported the Post Gazette.
