There was much chatter about the headliners at Glastonbury this year, as there is every year, but one act that really generated chatter was surprise guest Dolly Parton. It was the country icon's first performance at the festival and she made the most of it. The highlight of the affair was where she performed a previously unheard song and led the crowd, which The Hollywood Reporter reports was near 100,000 individuals, in chanting "mud, mud, mud." It was a reference to the quality of the field, turned to muck thanks to typical English weather and thousands of trampling feet. The number was such a hit, Parton's been asked to record a studio version.
"I'm getting so much demand for the mud song that we're talking about recording it. There have been so many requests," she told The Sun. "There is talk about getting a different artist to perform it every year."
Now that's an idea. Although Glastonbury honcho Michael Eavis has suggested that he may shut the event down in the near future, the idea of starting a yearly singalong handled by a different performer annually is pretty solid. That comes second only to lighting a huge wooden man on fire in terms of music festival traditions, especially considering that only Glastonbury can lay claim to what is now being affectionately referred to as "Mud." As we mentioned regarding the weather in England, odds are good that future festivalgoers will deal with the same conditions.
On the other hand, us festival attendees in the United States wouldn't mind seeing her perform it again back at home.
