It seems like just yesterday that rocker Caleb Johnson won season 13 of American Idol, but the 22-year-old's debut album is right around the corner. Today (July 28), Interscope released Johnson's second official studio single "Only One," and it's looking like he's aiming to be the next Phillip Phillips or Daughtry.
Despite his grit and wild live performances all throughout Idol season 13, "Only One" is shockingly subdued, stripped down, poppy and radio friendly. Edging more toward Goo Goo Dolls or Matchbox 20 than Led Zeppelin or Rush, Johnson is all gloss and little dirt for his major debut.
It's all very pretty and nice and highly produced, but it just doesn't feel like a true Caleb Johnson single. Where's the falsetto? The rebel yell? The balls to the wall energy? It's hard to even imagine this song live for someone who is so well known as a screamer.
Which isn't to say this song isn't a perfectly acceptable single or even a perfectly acceptable pop-rock song... it just feels a little off for Caleb Johnson...

"Only One" is the lead single from Johnson's debut album Testify, which is due to be released on Aug. 12. Originally touted as a self-titled release after Johnson won season 13 of American Idol, Testify will also feature his coronation single "As Long As You Love Me."
