The Jaded Hearts Club, which includes members from Muse, Blur, Last Shadow Puppets, Jet, and the Zutons, has released a cover of the Marvin Gaye single "This Love Starved Heart of Mine (It's Killing Me)."
Their cover, uploaded on the band's YouTube channel, is an updated rendition of Marvin Gaye's 1994 rarity. The soul track was initially recorded by Gaye 1967 shortly after his breakthrough "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," although it was not released until much later. In 1994, "Love Starved Heart" was finally a part of Marvin Gaye's rarities compilation "Love Starved Heart: Rare and Unreleased," which included his collaborations with Motown luminaries such as Smokey Robinson and Mickey Stevenson.
Following The Beatles and The Stones tradition of "finding great soul and blues standards and recording them in a more modern style," the alt-rock supergroup raised the energy of the Motown-era groove with their guitar riffs and prog-rock synths. The 2:50 video featured The Jaded Hearts' cover art for the single led by Jet frontman Nic Cester.
In an earlier news release, Jaded Hearts guitarist and founder Jamie Davis said: "As soon as I heard 'This Love Starved Heart Of Mine' I knew Nic Cester from Jet is one of the few people who could actually sing it." Davis described the Jet's lead vocals as having "that gut-wrenching on-pitch scream" and the "raw charisma," likening the resulting cover to a "runaway train - big, brassy, brash... a soul classic."
Jamie Davis co-managed independent label Transcopic Records with Blur guitarist Graham Coxon after giving up on the search for a Beatles cover band. Davis then rounded up Coxon, Cester, as well as Muse's Matt Bellamy, Last Shadow Puppets' Miles Kane, and The Zuton's Sean Payne in 2017 to form what would become the supergroup.
"The Jaded Hearts Club" started as a Beatles cover band recognized by Paul McCartney himself, who once played with the band for Beatles covers. Macca joined the Jaded Hearts in a 2018 performance of the Beatles' "Helter Skelter."
The name of the band is a parody of the 1967 Beatles album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
Aside from the Beatles' frontman joining the band for a performance, The Jaded Hearts Club has also enjoyed supporting performances from other occasional members, including Nic's brother, Jet drummer Chris Cester, Muse drummer Dominic Howard, Nine Inch Nails drummer Ilan Rubin, and Muse bassist Christopher Wolstenholme.
Muse frontman Matt Bellamy also shared that the band listened to "hours and hours of songs from the Northern Soul/Motown period" to find the 10 tracks that will make up their album." He also shared that this sums up what the band envisions "to shed light on some of the greatest lost songs ever written."
Marvin Gaye's "This Love Starved Heart of Mine (It's Killing Me)" marks the Jaded Hearts' second studio release, following their rendition of the Isley Brothers' 1962 hit "Nobody But Me." Both tracks are likely to be included in their upcoming studio album. However, no other details, such as the name or release date have been announced so far.
