"Whole Wide World" Singer Wreckless Eric Confirms Positive for Coronavirus

New wave singer-songwriter Wreckless Eric revealed testing positive for coronavirus in an online post, Sunday morning, April 19.

Wreckless Eric posted a link to his blog on Facebook, where he said, "We got tested by some miracle, and the results came in. I've got it. Here's some reading."

In his blog post, titled "The Inside Of A Ping Pong Ball," the British new wave musician opened up with an anecdote of a school punishment where he had to write a 1,200-word essay. He also expressed appreciation for his partner, Amy Rigby.

"I haven't actually been very well in the past three or four weeks," Wreckless Eric wrote, noting chest pains, cough, and intermittent headaches.

He then noted that he can still operate, though in a reduced capacity. He shared going for walks, only to experience difficulty breathing with the "slightest incline." Eric said that he believed either it was the virus or wasting disease. His challenging experience, swinging between days when he felt "quite depleted" and feeling better, "alive, well, fully functioning."

Once the couple knew they were qualified for testing in Albany, New York, Amy Rigby booked appointments for them. He also described the situation - with barriers, law enforcement officers, and healthcare workers. Wreckless Eric then described the testing procedure as shoving a big Q-tip up his nose and "waggle it about quite a lot."

He then expressed appreciation, not by clapping or banging saucepan lids, but by wanting to "see them properly rewarded for the work they do." He then took a swipe at the US's large defense budget "at the expense of decent healthcare for everyone," saying that it was not the smartest course of action.

Wreckless Eric noted that their results arrived last night, April 18. Eric, unfortunately, tested positive, although his wife Amy was negative despite losing her sense of smell for "about ten days."

"I felt deeply disturbed when I got the news and quite emotional," the Whole Wide World singer said.

Eric shared his thoughts on his mortality, further sharing that "growing list of friends that are no longer with us appears to be developing and it's becoming clear to me that one day I'll be on it." However, he said that he's not afraid of dying, but of the "manner in which it might come about." Recently, fellow British new wave musician Matthew Seligman passed away from COVID-19.

He also expressed concern about people going through the same experience alone and wishing that there was something he could do to help them. He also insisted that the coronavirus pandemic is not a hoax.

"I'm waving and sending love from inside my ping pong ball," his post concluded.

Eric Goulden, better known as Wreckless Eric, is best known for the song "Whole Wide World." Although it did not hit the charts upon its release, the song later earned recognition and following, landing in Mojo Magazine's "100 Punk Scorchers" in 2001.

He continued releasing solo albums as well as works with other artists such as Captains of Industry, Le Beat Group Electrique, and his wife, Amy Rigby. His latest album to date, 2019's "Transcience," generally received positive reviews from critics.
