Everyone knows that Childish Gambino is the hip-hop alias of Donald Glover, the actor best known for his role as Troy Barnes on the cultish-classic television show Community. And despite the increasing gap between his hard-nosed hip-hop persona and the lovable dolt he plays on television, many are questioning whether Glover will take a break from rapping to reprise his role as Troy when the show comes back as part of Yahoo Screen.
Dan Harmon, the creator and primary writer for the show, certainly hopes so.
"The first thing I want is to get Donald Glover back. I would do anything to have him," Harmon told TVLine in an interview. "I told Yahoo to do everything they could do to get him back for as much as we can get him."
One thing he won't settle for is Glover popping back just for one guest episode. Harmon insists that the performer play a somewhat regular role as in seasons past. Glover and/or Gambino might not be interested in that much commitment, considering the added enthusiasm he's put behind his work as an emcee in the last week. Not to put down his effort before, but it's a whole different ballgame when you declare yourself on par with any rapper and declare that you'll cut the heads off of Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q.
Imagining those lines coming from the mouth of our beloved Troy just doesn't seem right, and maybe that's the point. Perhaps Gambino is looking to separate himself from his onscreen character.
The plan seems to be working on HipHopDX, which seems to be confused as to whether "Glover" or "Gambino" is his real name, based on this sentence: "Recently, Community creator Dan Harmon said he would love to have Gambino, who acts as Donald Glover, return to the series he was once a part of."
