Scottish band Chvrches recently visited Jimmy Fallon's "The Tonight Show" and performed their single "Forever" yesterday, April 24.
Fallon introduced his new guests while sitting on a green bench amidst lush greenery instead of his usual backdrop for this "at-home" version of "The Tonight Show."
The band's four members performed their respective parts separately from their own homes, with the video scrolling across each musician with an added visual appeal courtesy of the multicolor filter they use.
Band frontwoman Lauren Mayberry looks especially energetic as she opens, "Savor the taste/Savor the pain/I don't expect you to release me." The song, which was originally included in their 2018 album "Love Is Dead," has recently found widespread fame and a spike in the number of listeners when it was featured in the third season of the hit Spanish thriller "Elite" on Netflix.
Following the revival of their now-hit single, the band first teased on their Instagram a four-way screen of the members at the start of the month, with the caption "CHVRCHing from home this week. Back soon." A few days after, they uploaded a video titled "Forever (Separate But Together Version)," playing from their respective homes.
Aside from the recent resurgence of "Forever," the band's latest single to date was the aptly-titled "Death Stranding," inspired by the pioneering video game of the same name from Japanese video game developer Hideo Kojima. The Chvrches song was also included in the positively-received official soundtrack "Death Stranding: Timefall," along with songs from other artists including Major Lazer and Khalid, Bring Me The Horizon, and The Neighbourhood.
A Chvrch of Synth-Pop and Video Game Anthems
The band Chvrches (pronounced "Churches") was formed by the trio of Mayberry together with Martin Doherty and Iain Cook. Their sound is mostly synth-pop, with elements from various subgenres of the electronic and indie music.
Chvrches released their debut studio album, "The Bones of What You Believe," two years after the band's formation in 2011. The Bones was released to critical acclaim, praising Mayberry's distinct vocals, as well as the proficient use of synthesizers and loopings. The songs in this album, as in all their following works, were mostly co-written by all three founding members.
"The Bones" was followed by "Every Open Eye," in 2015, also to positive reception. Similar to how the first album got its name from a line in one of the songs, "Every Open Eye" was from its third single "Clearest Blue," which also featured in the racing video game "Forza Horizon 3." The band also co-wrote the song "Warning Call," which was a bonus track on the Extended edition of the album, with Swedish EDM artist Solar Fields. The song was used in the 2016 platformer video game "Mirror's Edge Catalyst." Later that year, Chvrches released an updated version of the song "Bury It," now featuring Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams.
Their latest studio album, "Love Is Dead," started campaign with the deletion of all of Chvrches' social media pages, leaving only a short video saying "GET IN." The band released the album May last year, preceded by singles "Get Out," "My Enemy," "Never Say Die," and "Miracle."
