‘Mass Panic’ Caused 33 Deaths During Stampede At Rap Concert In Guinea

It's been reported that during a rap concert in Conakry, Guinea, a mass panic caused a stampede to break out and leave 33 people dead –– including 11 children.

Held on Rogbane beach, the concert featured the likes of Instinct Killers and Banlieuzart, and occurred in order to celebrate the end of Ramadan –– the Muslim holy month. Sources told the AFP, "There was a stampede to get out of the concert. It was after the show that it all happened. The crowd wanted to get out but there was a rope that blocked the way."

They added, "People at the back began pushing and people fell, creating a mass panic," which was undeniably too much for the small security team managing the concert to handle.

According to the source, the only exit for concertgoers to go through was a mere three meters wide. During the exit, thousands of people attempted to leave at once, both on foot and in vehicles, causing the aforementioned stampede.

Medics claim that 58 people received treatments of minor injuries, but alluded to the suspicion that others were treated elsewhere, so that number could very well be higher. Of the 11 children who were killed in the unfortunate incident, the ages ranged from 10 to 17 years old.

Following the events, the country's president, Alpha Condé, ordered that all beaches be closed so that the denizens can mourn for one week. He also publicized that the leader of Guinea's public events agency had been suspended until further notice, pending further review of the investigation.
