Nicole Young, Dr. Dre’s Wife, Files for Divorce After 24 Years

Rap icon and entrepreneur Dr. Dre and his wife Nicole Young are reportedly ending their marriage after 24 years, with Young filing for divorce, sources report on Monday, June 29.

According to a TMZ exclusive, Nicole Young filed for divorce with "irreconcilable differences" as the reason.

In the latest report from Forbes, the 55-year-old entertainment Mogul, who also owned the "Beats" headphone brand, has a net worth of $800 Million in 2019. TMZ also mentioned that Nicole, seeking spousal support, will be represented by Samantha Spector. The high-profile lawyer has close to two decades as a litigator and is no stranger to high-asset marital dissolutions and legal separation procedures.

Furthermore, the article said that there is no prenuptial agreement between Nicole and Dre. It implies that Nicole could be entitled to almost half of the rapper-producer's empire.

In 1996, Dre tied the knot with Nicole Young, former wife to NBA player Sedale Threatt. The rapper fathered a son with Nicole Young, Truice, the following year, and a daughter named Truly in 2001.

Aside from his two children with Nicole, Dre also had other children from previous relationships. In 1981, he had a son named Curtis with his then-girlfriend Cassandra Joy Greene. Three years later, in 1983, Dre and Lisa Johnson had a daughter, La Tanya Danielle Young. In 1988, he would father a son, Andre Young Jr, with Jenita Porter. Andre Jr. died in August 2008 from substance overdose. He was 20.

Rise to Fame and Being the "First Billionaire"

Dr. Dre, born Andre Romelle Young, first rose to prominence as a member of the legendary hip-hop collective N.W.A. In his tenure with the group, Dre is credited with producing some of N.W.A's most celebrated works. One of them was the 1991 "Efil4zaggin," which is backward for "Ni**az4life." The second studio album is recognized as the band's return to fame. It revitalized N.W.A. after Ice Cube left the group for a successful solo career.

In 1991, Dre would leave Eazy-E's Ruthless Records to join Death Row Records, which he co-founded together with Suge Knight, The D.O.C., and Dick Griffey.

In 2008, Dre would release his headphones' signature line, "Beats by Dr. Dre," which would spawn hit product lines in collaboration with other artists such as Lady Gaga's Heartbeats and Sean Combs' Diddy Beats.

By May 2014, tech giant Apple would purchase Beats for a staggering $3 billion. The purchase marked the company's most expensive undertaking at that point and made Dre "the first billionaire in hip-hop."

As a hip-hop icon, Dr. Dre has won six Grammy Awards: three for his performances and three for his production work. He has lent his voice and likeness for the 2005 video game "50 Cent: Bulletproof." Different stories about his life were also told through biographical films like the 2015 hit "Straight Outta Compton," a biopic about the N.W.A.

Dre is also an active philanthropist. In 2013, he and Jimmy Iovine donated $70 million to the University of Southern California (USC) to found the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Education. Dre has also pledged $10 million to the performing arts center of the then-upcoming Compton High School. He worked together with the local Compton Unified School District for the center.
