Kanye West has released a new song, "Donda," in honor of his late mother, Dr. Donda West. Ye's new track came with a music video announced on his Twitter page Sunday, July 12.
The surprise presidential candidate has taken to Twitter, posting a 2:19 snippet of the new track. He captioned: "In loving memory of my incredible mother on her birthday." Kanye noted that the track, titled "DONDA," features his mom "reciting KRS1 lyrics."
Kanye's sample featured a montage of city scenes. The video later showed footage of Kanye and Donda West singing his 2005 tribute "Hey Mama." Donda West can be heard at the start, reciting lyrics from KRS-One's 2000 anthem "Sound of da Police."
"There could never really be justice on stolen land. Are you really for peace and equality?" Donda asks. "Or when my car is hooked up, you know you want to follow me. Your laws are minimal."
"This has got to cease. Cause we be getting hyped to the sound of da police," Kanye's late mother continued, before a sparse beat started dropping. At around the minute-and-a-half mark, Kanye's starts singing. He seemingly alludes to his recent presidential move. "In this nation, we goin' start a revolution, in the basement," Yeezus raps.
He also mourns and calls for his mother in the following bars. "Mama I need you to tuck me in," Kanye West continued. "I've made some mistakes and they rubbed it in."
Public educator to entertainment manager
Dr. Donda C. Williams West was an English professor at Clark Atlanta University. She was also the English Department chairperson at Chicago State University. She later retired from public education to manage her son's career. Dr. Williams also raised Kanye as a single parent. When Kanye was three, she divorced her husband, photojournalist and Black Panther member Ray West.
Donda died in November 2007 after suffering a heart attack. The final coroner's report was released on January 10, 2008. It said that Donda died of "coronary artery disease and multiple post-operative factors due to or as a consequence of liposuction and mammoplasty."
Dr. Jan Adams, cosmetic surgeon and author, was the one who performed the breast reduction procedure on Donda West, the day before her death. In 2018, Kanye West released his eighth album , "Ye." However, it was first titled "Love Everyone" and in April of that year, he announced that the cover for his album would be a picture of Dr. Adams. In a now-deleted tweet, Kanye later changed the cover because Adams apparently did not approve of his plan. His album "Ye" was instead released featuring the mountain range surrounding his Cody, Wyoming.
His latest track, "Donda," is the latest move from the Grammy Award-winning rapper. Last week, during the Fourth of July, Kanye West announced his bid in the 2020 presidential race. "We must now realize the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future," West wrote on Twitter. He continued: "I am running for president of the United States," with an emoji of the US Flag and the hashtag #2020VISION.
