Eurovision Song Contest, which is primarily held in various countries in Europe, is finally coming to the United States. They will be heading to the US in 2021 with the "American Song Contest," which will bring together artists from all 50 states of the country.
We can thank producer and television executive Bill Silverman's Propagate Contest for bringing Eurovision to the United States. The official air date has yet to be announced.
"For more than 20 years, I have tried to bring Eurovision to the United States because it is the greatest and most successful format yet to be adapted," said Silverman in a press release.
More than 200 billion people tune in every year to watch the Eurovision Song Contest, which makes it one of the most popular and one of the most significant televised events in the world.
"Eurovision has shown that it can unite different countries and artists for a few nights every year to focus on their love and respect for music. Bringing The American Song Contest and the Eurovision together to the United States is an insanely ambitious project, but is one worth doing since we think these values are intrinsic to uniting a fractional America through its greatest export and global impact."
Propagate Contest and the American Song Contest will launch The American Song Contest Academy. This will house a group of U.S.-based music professions of varying genres who will test and judge artists and music industry figures. They will join regional audiences to select the best talents to represent their state. Following that, the selected artists will go head-to-head with talents from other states in a series of 5-10 televised qualifier rounds that will lead up to the semi-finals, then the primetime Grand Finale.
During the six decades of Eurovision's run, they have launched superstars into the industry, such as ABBA, Julio Iglesias, Lordi, and Celine Dion. The competition was recently spoofed in the Will Ferrel Netflix movie "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga." The actor and comedian received his first song on the Billboard's chart with "Husavik," which debuted at number sixteen on the Digital Songs Sales chart. As of July 11, 8,000 downloads were sold in the United States.
