Michael Johns, veteran of the seventh season of Fox's American Idol, died Aug. 1 from a blood clot in his ankle that he had recently twisted. The Australian-born singer reportedly passed away in his sleep at the age of 35. According to sources, he went to a doctor complaining about discomfort and swelling in his leg, but he was released without concern. He was later found on a friend's couch and was already unresponsive.
Johns was known for his soulful, impassioned voice. He placed eighth in his run on American Idol in 2008. Many who watched the show closely were surprised at his elimination from the contest.
Johns participated on the American Idols LIVE! tour shortly after the 2008 season ended. He then went on to release his EP, Love & Sex in 2012. Johns also appeared in David Foster's TV special, Hit Man: David Foster and Friends. He reportedly tweeted that he was going back to the studio to work on new album, Reckless, less than a month ago.
There has been an outpouring of condolences and support from the American Idol cast and fans. Judge Simon Cowell tweeted, as did Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. Several of the competition's alums are doing the same. American Idol released this statement on its Facebook page.
"Michael Johns was an incredible talent and we are deeply saddened by the news of his passing. He was a part of our AMERICAN IDOL family and he will be truly missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time."
