A 14-year-old New Orleans boy was walking home from band practice on Thursday night when a gunman emerged from a van, grabbed the boy's shirt and demanded his trombone.
According to area police (via AP), the teen ran away from the scene but dropped his trombone when he heard gunshots.
On Saturday, the boy received a brand new instrument courtesy of Troy Andrews, better known as Trombone Shorty. An Associated Press report detailed the scene: Bill Taylor, executive director of the Trombone Shorty Foundation, said he delivered the instrument -- engraved "Trombone Shorty" -- to the boy.
"He was like speechless," Taylor said. "And I got Troy on the phone. As soon as I gave him the horn I had Shorty on the line and gave him the phone."
Anderson described the phone call in an emailed quote to the AP: "(The teen) was full of joy, thankful and happy. I think we were both very excited to speak to each other. He seems like a cool kid and I'm happy that after a situation like that, I can help to put a smile on his face."
The boy's mother accepted the offer of the new trombone after receiving assurances that her son's name wouldn't be released because she feared for his safety.
Andrews was in Newport, R.I. on Saturday to play the Newport Jazz Festival before traveling to Chicago for his Sunday performance at Lollapalooza.
