Last month at J. Cole's Dollar & A Dream Tour in Los Angeles, guest artist Drake declared that he and Cole were "the only two kings in the game right now." Some people interpreted that a slight toward another rapper who once claimed the throne for himself, Kendrick Lamar.
As AllHipHop points out, Lamar and Drake have a history as both collaborators and competitors, and Drake clarified his thoughts on the Compton rapper during his OVO Fest performance.
"I want to shout out my n***a Kendrick Lamar," Drake said on stage next to Cole. "Kendrick was on my album. We went on tour together. That's one of the hardest n***as alive right there. He's legendary, so shout out to him. He should be standing right there. There's a lot of kings in this sh*t."
Lamar was featured on Drake's Take Care album, contributing to the track "Buried Alive Interlude." Drake was featured on Kendrick's hit "Poetic Justice," off the critically acclaimed good kid m.A.A.d. city.
The Compton rapper churned up rumors that there was tension between him and Drake after he name-checked him on his infamous "Control" verse and alluded to his album Nothing Was The Same during his BET Cypher video.
Drake also raised eyebrows when he presumably responded to Lamar's "Control" verse on Future's remix to "Sh!t."
It appears, however, that the back-and-forth shots are just part of the game and that the two rappers have nothing but respect for one another.
