Following in the footsteps of Bow Wow Wow, Aaron Carter, Melanie C, and probably a bunch of other artists, British pop singer Charli XCX recently performed a cover of the Strangeloves' 1965 hit "I Want Candy" for Transmitter Live, which you can watch below. Though the "Fancy" singer is known for her electronic, synth-pop sound, her take on "I Want Candy" remains pretty faithful to the guitar-based arrangement of the original version, or rather, Bow Wow Wow's more popular 1982 version.
This move over to guitars could possibly indicate a new direction that XCX wants to take her music in. Speaking with NME about her upcoming album, she revealed, "I was making a full on punk record, every song was maximum two minutes long, and then I merged that into pop a bit more. All the songs are bubblegum pink but, like, dripping in leather." She reportedly worked with Weezer's Rivers Cuomo and Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij on the album, which is slated for release in October.
Speaking about her successes collaborating with other artists in recent years, such as Icona Pop and, of course, Iggy Azalea, XCX admitted that she's eager to take in the spotlight on her own. "I can write a f*****g hit song," she said, "And I'm going to write some for me now. I feel like as an artist I've done so many collaborations now that I think I just want to take this record for myself."
