Phil Collins' health seemingly deteriorated in a snap.
From an energetic drummer who used to headbang in all his songs, Collins showed a drastic change when he recently appeared in front of his fans, looking frailer than ever. The 71-year-old singer joined Mike Rutherford and Rony Banks during their show in Berlin, Germany, where he remained seated throughout the setlist.
While Collins has been open about the cause that now keeps him away from playing the drums, the musician actually faced more dreaded health issues that affected his career, as well.
Phil Collins' Health Problems Explored
The severity of Collins' health issues recently rose, but in reality, he has been enduring several health problems for a decade now.
It all began in 2009 when he injured the vertebrae in his upper neck during a performance, leaving him with crippling nerve damage. It was the same issue he told "BBC Breakfast" about in September, saying that it caused him to be physically challenged to the point that he could barely hold a stick with his hands.
The same spinal injury reportedly led to his vertebrae crushing his spinal cord.
"Somehow, during the last Genesis tour, I dislocated some vertebrae in my upper neck, and that affected my hands," Collins explained at that time. "After a successful operation on my neck, my hands still can't function normally. Maybe in a year or so it will change, but for now it is impossible for me to play drums or piano."
The pressure after suffering from the injury led him to struggle with mental health issues. Unfortunately, it was a difficult time for him that almost caused him to take his own life. His past alcohol addiction after his retirement and divorce from his third wife, Orianne Cevey, made things worse.
As he tried recovering from his spinal injury, he was bombarded with type 2 diabetes that led to an infected diabetic abscess on his foot.
In 2017, Collins canceled two shows after suffering from a dreaded accident inside his hotel room. At that time, he hit his head on a chair and sustained cut that almost affected his eye. It was not an accident at all as he slipped due to the "foot drop" condition that he acquired following his back surgery.
Since then, he regularly relied to his cane and orthopedic shows to keep going.
His health battle did not stop there since he faced acute pancreatitis around the same time.
But despite these health battles he went through and still faces, Phil Collins keeps on holding his head high to give his fans the best performances he can give.
