The Los Angeles Branch of the House of Blues will be demolished at some point during 2015 to make room for a new residential project, the company announced Tuesday. The developers behind the project, AECOM and Combined Properties Inc., plan on a nearly 150-room hotel, 40 condominiums and five rental units. Somewhat ironically, a new concert venue is part of the grand design.
The venue chains seems to be taking it in stride, at least according to a statement given by representative Ashton Spatz.
"Our legendary House of Blues on Sunset Blvd-the flagship for 20 years of our popular venues around the country-will operate business as usual while we look for a new home. We have a terrific relationship with our landlord who has other plans to develop the property and we're working together on a very smooth transition. We have two-plus years to find that perfect spot...with no interruption for music fans. Stay tuned."
The Los Angeles location is currently the oldest venue in the House of Blues chain. It was opened during 1994, following the debut of the House of Blues franchise in Cambridge, MA during 1992. That location closed during 2003. Although the current Los Angeles venue is looking for a new home, there's also a House of Blues near Disneyland in the Anaheim area.
The announcement seems to be less bitter than another recent concert hall closing. The Roseland Ballroom hosted its final shows in New York this year, after property owners announced that it would be demolished to make room for new condos. Fans and music historians were less than pleased.
