2NE1 literally came back home when they reunited at the Coachella 2022 stage.
88 rising hyped fans when it announced that K-pop artists CL and Jackson Wang would be part of its "Head In The Clouds Forever" Coachella main stage. With the "MTBD" hitmaker's appearance, buzz about 2NE1's potential performance after their epic MAMA stage emerged.
Nothing was confirmed not until the four-piece legendary K-pop group took the stage and performed their hit song, "I Am The Best." The song is a recipient of different awards, including the Best Song of the Year at the Mnet Asian Music Award (MAMA) 2011.
After the girl group's comeback stage performance, its fandom, BLACKJACK, started to theorize that 2NE1's US debut is more possible now.
For what it's worth, buzzes about their return started last year when three members - Park Bom, Dara, and Minzy - appeared on a radio show. At that time, Park Bom revealed that she and the members had finished recording a track following their 11th anniversary.
The DJ asked whether it was okay to say it, to which Bom replied, "Well, we recorded something but we don't know if it'll ever be released."
With their upcoming 12th anniversary and recent Coachella reunion, BLACKJACK is now hopeful that the new track will arrive this year and start their US career.
Why Did 2NE1 Disband?
Fans' broken hearts have been healed upon seeing the four girls on stage again. But the reason behind their disbandment still lingers after all these years.
In 2016, the group ultimately disbanded following the members' individual issues and plans. Park Bom was embroiled in a drug issue and started her hiatus in 2014. Minzy left before 2NE1's disbandment.
Meanwhile, CL pursued a solo career in the US, while Dara continued focusing on her acting career.
YG Entertainment revealed at that time that only CL and Dara renewed their contracts under the agency, but a reporter-turned YouTuber revealed the real reason behind the band's breakup.
According to Lee Jin Ho, the three remaining members were scheduled to continue their promotion as a trio following Minzy's departure. However, their plans got ruined despite their comeback track and album recording were already completed.
YG Entertainment canceled the project because the agency failed to control one member at that time.
"This one member apparently had a hard time making up her mind," he said, as translated by Koreaboo. "This member had written a handwritten note for [then-YG Entertainment CEO] Yang Hyun-suk that revealed her intent to focus on her promotions, but she was unable to keep her promise."
He did not name who that member was, but he added that Minzy's exit became an eyeopener for then-CEO, Yang Hyun Suk.
