The Beatles' "Hey Jude" has a more heartbreaking history than what fans know, Julian Lennon revealed.

Among The Beatles' hit songs, "Hey Jude" became one of the most successful and most listened tracks due to its lyrics and beat. It was first nominated for the Grammy Awards of 1969 in three categories - Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.

Although "Hey Jude" did not win any of those, it won the succeeding nominations it got until it became one of the band's best songs.

But behind it is a dark story reminder for John Lennon's son, Julian.

What Made "Hey Jude" Revealed

On the recent episode of SiriusXM Volume radio show, "Debatable" (via The Independent UK), the now-59-year-old son of John and Cynthia Lennon divulged that the 1970 hit was written for him by Paul McCartney when his parents split.

According to Julian, he was not aware of what was happening between his parents. However, it finally sank in when he started seeing Yoko Ono more frequently than usual.

"I wasn't really aware of what was going on except when I started seeing Yoko [Ono] around, obviously, that made a bit of an impact and apparently I struggled with the separation a great deal at five. I would have raving moments of being a screaming child, but those moments haven't stuck with me," he said, as quoted by PEOPLE.

He added that, instead of breaking down because of the event, he always thought about moving forward and protecting his mother. After his parents got separated, his mother reportedly became his priority.

Julian Lennon Says Paul McCartney Saved Him, Gave Him Hope

Julian also noted how creating his new album, "Jude," led him to rethink his relationship with "Hey Jude." With that, he now has a different point of view on the song.

He also expressed his gratitude to McCartney for creating the song, as it saved him all the time after his parents' separation.

"I am thankful to Paul for writing it and putting some hope behind what was to come. But the downside of it was it was a dark reminder of what actually went down at the time, the separation," he said.

Julian added that he watched the 2021 documentary series, "The Beatles: Get Back." Once again, he was given a chance to revisit his childhood memories with his father years after his tragic death.
