In a shocking turn of events, singer Phoebe Bridgers has revealed that she had an abortion last fall while on tour in response to a shocking announcement that the US Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade next month.

The 27-year-old singer, who was born and raised in California, detailed her story on Instagram Stories on Tuesday in response to a leaked draft opinion predicting a repeal of the 1973 landmark case that effectively legalized abortion in the United States.

"I had an abortion in October of last year while I was on tour," she wrote. "I went to Planned Parenthood where they gave me the abortion pill. It was easy. Everyone deserves that kind of access."

Bridgers included a link to 'a comprehensive list of organizations to which people can at the moment donate to, in support of abortions in states where access to the surgery has been restricted.

The four-time Grammy nominee attended Monday's Met Gala with her boyfriend, actor Paul Mescal. In August 2020, the couple initiated dating rumors, and in December 2021, they made their relationship Instagram official. It's of course unclear whether it is his baby that was aborted.

They were at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's star-studded benefit when Politico leaked the explosive draft opinion.

Chief Justice John Roberts verified the draft's validity, but cautioned that it does not represent the court's "final conclusion."

Conservative Justice Samuel Alito stated in the leaked document that Roe v. Wade - the Supreme Court decision holding that excessive state restriction of abortion is unconstitutional - was "egregiously erroneous from the outset' and'must be reversed."

Alito, who was appointed to the court by George W. Bush in 2006, contended that Roe's "reasoning was extraordinarily weak, and the decision had unfavorable implications."

"Far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division," he wrote.

Apart from Alito, Politico reported that four other judges voted to repeal the law: Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, who were all selected by Republican presidents.

If the conservative-dominated court, where Republicans hold a 6-3 majority, overturns the ruling, it would give individual states the authority to decide whether to prohibit abortion.

The Guttmacher Institute, a pro-choice research organization, declared that if Roe v. Wade is reversed, 26 states are "certain or probable" to restrict abortion.

Abortion rights have come under attack in recent months as Republican-led states tighten regulations, with some attempting to prohibit all abortions after six weeks, when many women are unaware they are pregnant.

Governor Doug Ducey of Arizona signed a bill prohibiting abortions beyond 15 weeks of pregnancy in March. At the same time, Idaho Governor Brad Little signed a six-week abortion restriction, similar to a Texas law approved last year, that empowers family members of the unborn to sue providers who perform abortions beyond that time.
