According to the Associated Press, Kidd Creole, a founding member of the rap group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, has been sentenced to 16 years in jail for the murder of John Jolly. It can be remembered how senseless the crime was - the rapper just stabbing the man who innocently asked him "What's Up?"

This can very well the justice that the family is seeking after losing their loved one.

"Mr. Jolly's death was devastating to his family and those who knew him," Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said on Wednesday via ABC7 New York. "Every life we lose to violent crime ripples throughout our entire city, and we will continue to ensure everyone in our borough can live their lives with the sense of safety and security they deserve."

D.A Bragg added, "This case makes clear that if you commit violent crime, we will hold you accountable, and I thank our team for their hard work achieving justice in this matter."

The 62-year-old rapper - whose actual name is Nathaniel Glover - stabbed 55-year-old Jolly twice in the chest in August 2017 while on his way to work in Midtown Manhattan, according to Pix11.

Following the stabbing, a group of tourists discovered Jolly in the street. He was rushed to a neighboring hospital, where he succumbed to his stab wounds, according to the site.

Glover's lawyer, Scottie Celestin, contended during his April trial that his client was acting in self-defense. According to the legal expert, Creole's defenses were raised because the question of "what's up" does not seem innocent, considering at the time, they were in New York and it's 12mn. At the time, Celestin was doing everything he could to convince the jury that his client's actions were understandable, as Deadline reported.

Celestin did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Glover's sentencing.

At Glover's trial, Assistant District Attorney Mark Dahl testified that the former rapper admitted to authorities that he stabbed the man not in self-defense, but because he believed he was hitting on him.

"The defendant confessed to pulling out a kitchen knife and repeatedly thrusting it into the body of a stranger on the street, killing him," Dahl said via ABC7 New York. "Was there anything that would prevent him from simply running away from Mr. Jolly? No."
