Madonna understands that she has not always acted in the manner that the church would want. However, in a tweet addressed to Pope Francis on Wednesday (May 4), the artist expressed a desire for a second chance to create a good first impression while also requesting a private meeting with the Pontiff to discuss some serious matters.
"Hello @Pontifex Francis -
I'm a good Catholic. I Swear! I mean I don't Swear!" Madonna said. "Its been a few decades since my last confession. Would it be possible to meet up one day to discuss some important matters?"
The legendary singer and performer did not specify what was on her mind, she also asked for some other papal absolution.
"I've been ex communicated 3 times. It doesn't seem fair," she added.
Madonna, who was baptized and raised Catholic, slipped into a car alongside James Corden for an episode of "Carpool Karaoke" in 2016, where she vogued, discussed musical theater, fully french kissed Michael Jackson, and casually mentioned that she'd been excommunicated by the Vatican at least three times before breaking into "Papa Don't Preach."
The Vatican harshly denounced Madonna's 1989 single "Like a Prayer" for its representation of Christian religious iconography - including burning crosses and a make-out session with a sexy Jesus - which the church deemed heretical. It redoubled its opposition to her in 2006, when Madonna enacted a mock crucifixion during a show in Rome.
While she awaits a response, the singer said on Wednesday that she will reflect on her record-setting run on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart, where she has a total of 50 chart-topping singles, the most of any single Billboard chart.
"Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones" was curated by the pop queen herself and will be available in two editions: a 16-track Finally Enough Love edition and a 50-track deluxe edition; the 16-track edition will be available on streaming services on June 24 and the deluxe edition will be available on digital download, CD, and vinyl on Aug. 19.
