Once again, musicians are supporting the programs of the international advocacy organization Global Citizen. Several renowned artists have entrusted their names to supporting the fight against two very heavy issues the world is continuing to face: poverty and climate change. It is hoped that their names, can certainly propel those who can do so much, to actually act and end poverty and reverse the bad effects of climate change.
Billie Eilish, Coldplay, and Shawn Mendes, among others, have collaborated with Global Citizen on an open letter urging governments, leaders of the private sector, and billionaires to take immediate action against poverty and climate change.
The World Bank estimates that around 100 million more people have been plunged into extreme poverty over the past five years as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on global efforts to eradicate poverty in our lifetimes.
The lengthy message, which is part of Global Citizen's End Extreme Poverty Now campaign, urges world leaders to make immediate, substantive changes on issues such as "breaking institutional barriers that keep people in poverty," taking immediate climate action, and empowering young women and girls across the globe.
The letter was announced on May 22 at the beginning of Global Citizen NOW, the organization's inaugural leadership summit in New York City. The two-day event features over 200 speakers from lobbying, activism, philanthropy, journalism, politics, science, and popular culture.
