Paul McCartney chose the best inspiration to create one of the songs in The Beatles' album, "Abbey Road."
Out of The Beatles members, McCartney is the most public about how he has written and composed songs throughout their career.
For instance, he said he made "Yesterday" when he was about to sleep and composed "Hey Jude" for John Lennon's son, Julian.
But among his inspirations, a heartfelt poem gave birth to their "Abbey Road" album's song, "Golden Slumbers."
In his 1997 book, "Many Years From Now," McCartney said that he based the hit track on "Cradle Song" - a poem from Thomas Dekker's play, "Patient Grissel."
He revealed that he liked the poem's words so much. However, he faced one problem while doing it.
"I thought it was very restful, a very beautiful lullaby - but I couldn't read the melody, not being able to read music. I just took the words and wrote my own music. I didn't know at the time it was four hundred years old," he explained.
McCartney divulged that he tried to get a strong vocal on it due to the poem's gentle theme. In the end, he felt quite pleased with it. He also served as the lead vocalist for the song and had its main recording session in July 1969.
The Beatles' George Harrison Also Liked the Album
Aside from McCartney, Harrison also fell in love with the album as a whole.
In his book "George Harrison: Interviews and Encounters," he named "Because" his favorite track due to its "harmony."
"Just because I like three-part harmony. We've never done something like that for years, I think, since a B-side, 'If you wear red tonight', and 'what I said tonight.' So I like that. I like, I dunno - I like lots of them. I like 'You Never Give Me Your Money' and 'Golden Slumbers' and things," he went on.
In the years after releasing the song, The Beatles' "Golden Slumbers" caught musicians' attention that they made song covers of it, including Judy Collins. She included the track on her 2007 album, "Judy Collins Sings Lennon and McCartney."
Rock band Elbow also performed the song for the John Lewis Christmas advertisement in 2017 and became No. 9 on the UK's singles chart.
In addition, Dua Lipa sang the song in her Live Acoustic EP in 2017.
